Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to What Families Ask Most

We know choosing in-home care is one of the most important decisions your family will make. Here are honest, clear answers to the questions we hear most often.

Pricing & Costs
How much does in-home care cost in the Bay Area?
Non-medical in-home care in the San Francisco Bay Area typically ranges from $45 to $55 per hour depending on the type of care, hours needed, and specific location. Live-in or 24-hour care is priced differently. We offer a free home assessment to help you understand exactly what level of support makes sense and what it will cost. Call (650) 592-8950.
Does insurance cover in-home care?
Most non-medical in-home care is not covered by standard health insurance or Medicare. However, long-term care insurance policies often do cover it. Veterans may qualify for VA benefits that cover in-home care. We recommend checking your specific policy and speaking with a benefits advisor. We're happy to help you navigate this.
Our Caregivers
Are your caregivers background checked and insured?
Yes — without exception. Every caregiver undergoes a thorough criminal background check before placement. At Home With Care carries full general liability insurance and workers' compensation coverage. Your family is protected from day one.
How do you match caregivers to clients?
We don't just assign whoever is available. After your free home assessment, we learn about your loved one's personality, preferences, daily routines, medical needs, and the qualities that matter most to your family. We then select a caregiver based on experience, temperament, and fit. Most families tell us the match is exactly right.
What happens if our caregiver is sick or unavailable?
We handle it. One of the core advantages of working with a licensed agency rather than an independent caregiver is backup coverage. If your caregiver is ever sick or unavailable, we arrange a qualified replacement. Your loved one's care is never interrupted.
Getting Started
How quickly can care start?
In most cases, care can begin within 24 to 48 hours of a confirmed care plan. For urgent post-hospitalization situations, we prioritize same-day or next-day placement. Call (650) 592-8950 directly for urgent needs.
What happens during the free home assessment?
Marilou or a senior team member visits your home to meet your loved one, discuss their needs and preferences, review the home environment, and answer all your questions. There's no charge and no obligation. It's simply a caring conversation to understand how we can help.
Do you require a minimum number of hours per week?
We have a minimum shift duration to ensure quality care, but we work with families to accommodate a wide range of scheduling needs — from a few hours a week to full-time or overnight care. Contact us to discuss your specific situation.
Services
What types of care do you provide?
We provide non-medical personal care (bathing, grooming, dressing), companion care, Alzheimer's and dementia care, post-hospitalization recovery support, meal preparation, medication reminders, transportation and errands, and light housekeeping. All services are customized to your loved one's needs.
Do you provide Alzheimer's and dementia care?
Yes. Our caregivers have specialized experience with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. We provide consistent routines, behavioral support, wandering prevention, meaningful engagement, and regular family communication. Learn more on our Alzheimer's Care page.
Service Areas
What areas do you serve?
We serve all six Bay Area counties: San Mateo County, San Francisco County, Santa Clara County, Marin County, Alameda County, and Contra Costa County. If you're not sure we cover your area, call us and we'll confirm.
Agency vs. Independent
Why use an agency instead of hiring independently?
When you hire an independent caregiver, you become their legal employer — responsible for payroll taxes, workers' compensation, backup coverage, and liability if something goes wrong. A licensed agency handles all of this. Our caregivers are background-checked, insured, trained, supervised, and covered. It's safer, simpler, and provides far better protection for your family.
